Sweetheart

I've had several names in the past and they vary widely from "muscles" (which obviously refers to my impressive strength) "Raquelita", "Miss Rachel", "Miss Hahn", and Hot Dog Woman. I would have to say one that holds a special place in my heart is when David calls me "sweetheart".
Often when working with David I feel the brunt of his frusration in subjects he struggles with. I like to believe we have formed a special relationship and we have a mutual respect for each other. However, there are days when it seems my very presence irritates him. In my mind I know that emotions change rapidly and mood swings are common. I also realize of course that I am here to enrich David's academic skills not necessarily to be his best friend. It is the dilehma all teachers face and parents alike, to find that balance of disciplinarian, authority, confidant, and friend. After the first few weeks of working with David, his mother said to me, "Well, the honeymoon is over!". Which so accurately described what was happening. I was no longer someone new and fun to work with. I was a part of his everday routine and with that our relationship changed. So in those moments when David smiles at me and says, "Miss Hahn you a sweetheart" I take a snapshot and store it in my memory to pull out later on days when I'm not on David's top ten list.

"Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones."
Proverbs 16:24
