Flying ants....tasty snack!?!

This week a popular topic in conversations has been the flying ants. First, it was brought up by the students of the classroom, later I had a conversation with my friend Denisse about them. Here is what I have learned..

The ants come but once or twice a year. The Ecuadorians love to eat them! Now there are a number of different ways to prepare the ants as a snack. As my friend described to me, you first rip off the wings and legs. Then you mix the ant with salt and chew it for its flavor and then spit it out. Apparantly, there was a patient in the hospital who had eaten so many ants their digestive system got blocked up!

Today after the lunch break, there were several students offering, a bit too graciously, some "nuts". Of course, they were not really nuts, they were the much talked about flying ants. These ants had been fryed for eating. And yes, I did eat one! It tasted kind of like the bits of popcorn kernels that don't get entirely popped. I wouldn't say it was the greatest thing I ever tasted but it wasn't horrible either. New things everyday! I try to take my dad's philosophy which is to try anything new at least once! (a second time is not garaunteed!)
